SPOTLIGHT ON AIR QUALITY DATA

Logging, validating, displaying and using air quality data

True to their mission statement "To seamlessly provide the most detailed global air quality information, showing real-time exposure and actionable future forecasting to optimise decision making and mitigation, for the betterment of human health." EarthSense have continued to grow from strength to strength. In this release of the Spotlight sessions, we have a look at innovative EarthSense Zephyr deployments, and how collected data is used in certain key sectors.

Beyond the obvious uses of the Zephyr sensor in the monitoring of ambient air quality, EarthSense have also focused on the following three sectors:

  • Transport & ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems);

  • Construction & Engineering;

  • Local authorities & Smart cities.

EarthSense partnered with the Coventry City Council to integrate Zephyr air quality data with existing traffic management systems. EarthSense deployed a network of 12 solar powered and hard-wired Zephyr® air quality sensors in areas of the city centre identified as having high levels of congestion and air pollution. This data was used to trigger messaging about pollution (NO2) levels and encourage usage of alternative routes via Variable Messaging Signs (VMS) to divert motorists away from heavily congested roads and pollution hotspots.

EarthSense work with engineers, planners, consultancies and construction professionals to help build cleaner and smarter cities, buildings, roads and railways with less impact of air pollution on the health of workers and the local community.

Real-time measured Zephyr data and modelled MappAir data is often used collectively to inform large scale construction and urban planning projects giving immediate insight into the impacts of air quality.

This data allows users to react immediately; changing methods of work, ensuring compliance, securing green certification and validating measurements from mobile machinery assessments on site to create safe working environments.

Local authorities and central governments play a big part in managing air pollution and Zephyr data is used in many ways to help them meet their air quality targets as set out by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the European Union.

EarthSense work with the likes of urban and smart city planners, environmental and highways officers to provide real-time measured and modelled air pollution data to create and evidence pollution-lowering strategies.

Zephyr data is being used to create and implement car-free zones and cycle lanes, road closures at school gates, re-routing traffic from congested areas and informing large scale highways projects. Click here to read the case study.
